Poem #4-Wild Desert Tulip
Soft white skin, long wavy
Leaves, a brilliant yellow center,
Drawing eyes to this star shaped
Beauty, tepals olive-mauve, like
A blushing woman- a wild desert tulip.
In a world naked of love,
Like it’s empty night sky,
Land of scorpions, snakes,
Dung beetles- stands a
Wild desert tulip.
A habitat far from home,
Still and solemn, drugged by
The sun, drained like water from
The desert’s earth- stands the
Wild desert tulip.
Listless flowers slowly drooping petals,
Like the sand drifting down a dune,
Weakening stems dragging to the ground,
Limp as a viper’s prey, now frail-
Stands the wild desert tulip.
An unrelenting sandstorm thrashing through,
Thinning petals swirling with the winds
Nicked by sand grains, aged, like her
Now pale ruddy-rose tepals- here
Stands the Wild desert tulip.
Other flowers lost by the worlds
Destruction, her roots planted firm
Strong as her character, fragrant life
Escaping each fragment of sand,
Still stands- this wild desert tulip.
Very good imagery and I like the repetition of “wild desert tulip” at the end of each stanza.
I really enjoyed your poem. You used extended metaphors (comparing the tulip to a woman), similes, and vivd imagery to create a wonderful picture for the reader. It was a great read.
The imagery is stunning and beautiful and the alluding to the trials the tulip faces and withstands clear. I love the idea and execution of this poem, you did a wonderful job!
